The Whitney, Detroit's iconic restaurant in an 1890's Woodward Avenue mansion, has announced plans for a first ever summer -- full of outdoor dining and entertainment activities in its newly refurbished gardens.
The garden activities are being promoted through a whimsical new ad featuring a smiling, relaxed gnome inviting guests to "kick back in the garden," a new look and more casual approach for the elegant Whitney.
"Summers are short in Michigan and people want to be outside to enjoy them. With our gardens and our ad we want to appeal to all our regulars, plus introducing a whole new audience to The Whitney, and we think the garden experience and the variety of dining and entertainment options we'll offer will appeal to just about everyone," said Bud Liebler, owner of The Whitney.
"The Whitney has never offered regular garden dining in the past. We've had occasional garden parties but no ongoing opportunities for diners to enjoy sit down lunches and dinners in our colorful oasis in Midtown. Now our gardens -- and our kitchen -- are ready and we're expecting them to become an important addition to the Detroit dining scene."
In addition to The Whitney's highly regarded formal dining menu, the gardens will offer more casual fare as well, plus Monday through Friday Happy Hours from 4 to 6 p.m. where all Garden menu food is half off. There will also be a rotating schedule of live and recorded music, everything from classical to popular and acoustical music as well as free shuttle service to Tigers night games and other around-town activities. Current event listings can be found on the restaurant's website at http://www.TheWhitney.com .
"Detroit has been down on itself for too long. The city needs more reasons to smile," said Liebler. "We want The Whitney gardens to be a place where people can do what our ad says, kick back, relax and smile a whole lot."
